ScienceForCitizens.net
Philadelphia, PA

Position Description:

Think Craigslist meets Match.com in the realm of citizen science. This beta site already has the early endorsements of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Science Foundation. By engaging volunteers in such projects as tagging butterflies, monitoring the quality of water, and classifying galaxies, the site will provide unique recreational activities to curious, active members of the general public, help advance scientific knowledge, and create a better informed populace with a more solid understanding of and appreciation for science. Responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):
-Online research to scout citizen science projects and feed editorial information into an online database.
-Obtain rights/permissions to use text, images, and other media on the site.
-Manage relations with volunteers (help answer questions)
-Help develop and implement plans to promote the site using e-newsletters, social networks (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), and other online marketing tools
-Participate in fun citizen science projects and report on them by posting regular blog entries, images, and video clips (a chance to be a star!)
-Basic graphic design, if intern is qualified
-Basic video editing, if intern is qualified
-The intern will have first-hand access to the founders, both of whom are seasoned professionals in the publishing world. The intern will gain valuable lessons on researching, writing, editing, marketing, public relations, project management, and other facets of online publishing. And, the intern will be invited to participate in planning, strategy and operational meetings.

Self-motivator, multi-tasker, organized and detail-oriented, excellent online social network skills, strong writer. Ideal but not necessary: interest in or knowledge of science, experience with i-movie or other video editing software, familiarity with online publishing tools, experience with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or other graphic design programs.
