Chair and Full-time Faculty Member in Digital and Time-based Media

Paid40 hoursPhiladelphiaYear Round

Description

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) seeks a chair and full-time faculty member in digital and time-based media. A museum/school with a fine art focus, PAFA has a rich history of narrative figuration and innovative approaches to art-making. PAFA Alumni include Thomas Eakins, Njideka Akuniyli Crosby, and David Lynch, who made his first moving image piece at PAFA as a student. PAFA currently offers several digital media courses, including digital painting, 3D printing, digital print and web design, photography, and video, and seeks to expand its curriculum, particularly in the realm of time-based media and experimental approaches to animation. These expanded offerings will complement PAFA’s undergraduate concentrations in painting, drawing, illustration, printmaking and sculpture, and its interdisciplinary graduate programs.

The chair will provide oversight over PAFA’s digital media offerings, and will bring vision and leadership to developing a new concentration in experimental animation and time-based media. The chair will write curriculum, plan for equipment and facility needs, hire faculty, and work with the Admissions department to recruit new students for the program.

Requirements

Applicants should excel at teaching a broad range of subjects, from foundations courses in digital media to intermediate and advanced courses in experimental animation and time-based media. Candidates should demonstrate strong narrative skills, proficiency in the principles of animation, and the ability to teach both hand-made and computer generated approaches. The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of contemporary art, and will make vital contributions to PAFA’s graduate studio programs, mentoring students who are pursuing their studio research.

The position rank is open. Applicants should have an MFA or equivalent experience, and at least two year of teaching experience. Applicants should submit a letter of interest that articulates their theoretical approach to animation and time-based media, and vision for this new area of study at PAFA. Additionally, they should submit an artist statement, teaching philosophy that includes the applicants approach to supporting a diverse and inclusive classroom, a link to artistic work, and the work of students if available.
